Napoleon in Devon?

According to publicity blurb for the Port Eliot Literary Festival in St.Germans:

The eccentric nature of the festival is a reflection of the singular history and character of Port Eliot itself. Inhabited since the Bronze Age, it has housed Augustinian monks, survived confiscation by Charles I’s Court of the Star Chamber and been declared the most beautiful place in England by Napoleon.

His holiday was very cognito.

The crowds came from miles around to see him.

'Despite being held prisoner aboard HMS Bellerophon, moored briefly at Torbay and then Plymouth Sound in 1815, Napoleon was basking in rock star status.

The waters around the anchored British warship were thick with boats laden with sightseers desperate to catch a glimpse of this ‘tyrant of Europe’. Obligingly the great man would take regular turns on deck to their delight.

“It is incredible when you think there was no media hype or pictures flashed across the world – yet up to 10,000 people at the same time were in boats in Plymouth Sound,” says Mike.

In entertainment terms Bonaparte was a massive box office draw – and this albeit brief bout of public frenzy was ‘win win’ for the coastal economy.

Instead of catching mackerel, local fishermen were netting a more lucrative living carrying shoals of sightseers out to the Bellerophon.'

The funny thing is Napoleon III came here for asylum as well when it was his turn.

He was killed on the operating table. His son joined the British army and was killed in South Africa.

But then his native Corsica was British in 1794 for a while.

Is it me, or does that cry out for a caption competition?

1) Napolean's insistence on a diet of beans and garlic, washed down by Guinness, eventually alienated him from his British hosts

Tut tut, Tut's beard's broken!

One of the most priceless treasures in archaeology, the gold funerary mask of King Tutankhamun, was damaged during a cleaning attempt at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Efforts to repair the problem were also botched, according to reports.

The mask's beard snapped off during an attempt to clean the mask in October. Museum staff stuck it back on using epoxy, which leaked onto the face of the mask and dried. Then, the mask was scratched when the workers scraped off the epoxy, according to Al Araby Al Jadeed, a London-based Arabic news site.

You just can't get the staff these days. On board the SS Golden Rivet, we're much more careful about these kind of repairs.

All of life’s problems can be solved with two things—duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn’t, you need duct tape. And if it doesn’t move and it should, you need WD40. And a hammer.

WD40 can also protect trees from beavers. And if that duct tape gets stuck you can remove it with WD40.

What a wonder product.

Here's a rare opportunity to get into the Cornish Tin Mining business.

For sale: Lower Boquio Farm, Farms Common, Wendron, Helston, Cornwall

Only £500K, a snip for someone from London.

"So what?" I hear you say. It just happens to be sitting on top of a hill close to the world-famous Poldark Mines.

Buy the house, start drilling.

Wendron is also the location of the Lezerea standing stone and the Burras Standing Stone.

Bing Bong - service announcement

M'Lady Boreades and 'er 'umble hautomobile chauffeur are off to the Southampton Boat Show at sparrows tomorrow. We're going to review the new TME flagship.

Image

It's a shallow-draft vessel, good for getting up historically important rivers and creeks. But with a large cargo hold and an excellent turn of speed for outrunning HM Customs while M'Lady imports her special imports. We're just filming a remake of "Brandy for the Parson", honest guv!

We might need to sell Chateau Boreades, the dogs, children and chickens first. But it's in a good cause.

Terms and conditions might apply for additional TME shareholders. The value of your investment can only go up (in my estimation).
