If amber can be found all over the world why is so much of it concentrated in the one Baltic region?

Did they farm the stuff? Was there something in the area that caused the trees to produce sap in such quantities?

This is also the area that draws water from trees, especially birch trees, in the spring. This is a natural source of drinkable water which is full of minerals and other nutrients. Do trees tend to produce resin after they've been bled for the water?
