Discover the dolmens of Russia

Postby VestnikRA » 6:54 am

Some time ago I wrote an article for "Space of Love" magazine about dolmens of Russia - amazing and probably less known megalithic structures in the world. I would like to share it with you here, please enjoy:

Fascinating pictures, thank you Vestnik and welcome. Dolmens come up in The Megalithic Empire, though not Russian examples, and we concluded they were storehouses for long-distance travellers.

You are unlikely to find anyone on this site who would describe dolmens or indeed megaliths as 'sacred' but we're an open-minded lot I think. It's up to you to prove your point!

The Caucasian dolmens represent a unique type of prehistoric architecture, built with precisely dressed cyclopic stone blocks. The stones were, for example, shaped into 90-degree angles, to be used as corners or were curved to make a perfect circle. The monuments date between the end of the 4th millennium and the beginning of the 2nd millennium B.C.

Bird-boxes! Of course.

A few months ago, two Tower of London ravens were killed by a fox. The ravens are kept overnight in cages so they're not often filched by predators which raises the question how the Megalithics' trained birds were protected, especially in view of those tempting food stashes.

The Keeper of the Ravens warns the birds' strong beaks are capable of taking a child's hand off [but it hasn't happened to date]. Quite an effective Guardian of the Hole.

Hello VestnikRA

Thank you for expanding our horizons. Your view of Dolmens as places of life and growth is powerful, as many of the Dolmens here in Britain seem to have been (mis)used as burial chambers many centuries (or even thousands of years) after they were first built. The original purpose is now unclear, because our historians are looking at who last used it.

Yes. I am sure the dolmens have a deep meaning and purpose! They are found everywhere in the world. Many people come to dolmens of Russia for pilgrimage.
Please read a story of one of those people - http://www.spaceoflovemagazine.com/imag ... ges3_4.pdf
